A DAY IN CAMBRIDGE:
THE FITZWILLIAM MUSEUM for RISE UP EXHIBITION
Coach trip, talk by Dr Victoria Avery, exhibition tour
Tuesday, 13 May 2025
Springtime in Cambridge – we have planned a day trip by coach to this beautiful university city linked to a talk by a great supporter of Art Friends Warwickshire, Dr Victoria Avery, Keeper of European Sculpture & Decorative Arts at the renowned Fitzwilliam Museum and Professor of European Sculpture, University of Cambridge. Vicky, who used to lecture at the University of Warwick, is curator of the new exhibition, Rise Up, which considers how transatlantic slavery impacted British cultural life. Some may remember her talk on her exhibition, Fast & Feast, at our very first event in 2020. Her lively approach will guarantee a compelling show and introductory talk. Rise Up highlights the roles played by black Georgians and Victorians as well as countless women – resistance leaders, abolitionists. Contemporary and historic artworks from overseas and the University of Cambridge reveal how word and image were tools of resistance, along with song and dance.
After coffee and the talk, you are free to spend the rest of the day as you wish – tour the exhibition, explore the magnificent holdings of the Fitzwilliam Museum, take lunch, venture into the town, even to Kettle’s Yard (time-ticket booking).
NEW: A pick-up point has been organised for Rugby/Coventry members. A few cars are permitted to park for free in the carpark of the Showcase Cinema at the Walsgrave Triangle, next to junction 2 on the M6 where it meets the M69. The coach cannot enter the car park itself but will stop nearby at the kerbside.
When you book on-line, please separately email Dianne Page indicating (if you are the driver) where you will park: Showcase or Henley.
