Cezanne’s Watercolours
Talk by Professor Paul Smith

Until lately, Cézanne’s watercolours have been regarded as subsidiary to his paintings, sometimes as mere preliminary sketches for these more serious works. However, recent scholarship has suggested that some ought to be considered as independent works of art in their own right, which allowed Cézanne greater luminosity and transparency of colour than he could achieve in oil. This talk will examine these issues.
It will also ask whether pencil and watercolour are two separate systems in the watercolours, as some have claimed, or whether there is dialogue between them. It will draw on developments in our understanding of visual perception to address these questions.

Professor Paul Smith is Professorial Research Fellow at the University of Warwick and throughout his career has published a significant numbers of books and research papers on Cézanne for British and US academic bodies. Currently he is working on projects for 2028 exhibitions on Cézanne for the Courtauld and the National Gallery.
