Making Ideas Visible:
From Creative Learning to Cultural Infrastructure
Lunch and Talk by Lucy Tomlins
In this informal lunchtime talk, Lucy Tomlins, Founding Director of Pangaea Sculptors’ Centre, will reflect on how Art Friends Warwickshire’s support for Adventures in Material and Space helped spark a much larger journey exploring the role sculpture can play in learning, community engagement and placemaking.
What began as a series of hands-on creative workshops has grown into a wider programme of research, partnership and delivery, helping shape new approaches to sculpture education, artist development and public participation. Lucy will share how lessons from Adventures in Material and Space informed the development of Pangaea’s 3D–5D Learning Revolution—an innovative sculptor-led learning programme, now being delivered with schools, artists, universities and industry partners.
Alongside examples of recent projects, the talk will explore a broader question: what might become possible if more people had access to opportunities to make, experiment and learn through materials? At a time when practical, creative and collaborative learning opportunities are increasingly scarce, sculpture offers powerful ways to develop confidence, curiosity, problem-solving and connections to place. Warwickshire is not always perceived as a priority area for investment, and there remain significant gaps in access to creative and technical learning opportunities.
Looking ahead, Lucy will introduce Pangaea’s new Mobile Sculpture Studio and share ambitions for future collaboration with artists, cultural organisations, schools, businesses and local supporters to create more opportunities for people of all ages to learn and participate.
The session will offer a glimpse of a growing movement to make the act of making more visible, accessible and valued within everyday life. It is also a chance to reflect on the role local advocacy and support can play in ensuring that Warwickshire’s creative potential continues to grow for future generations.
