Art Friends Warwickshire – visit to Compton Verney
A talk, lunch with friends then the chance to see a special exhibition blending old with the new. Oli McCall, Senior Curator at Compton Verney, will talk to us about the gallery’s new exhibition, History in the Making, which shows outstanding examples of historic works from the collection of Woburn Abbey presented alongside creations by today’s craftsmen from the collection of the Crafts Council. Compton Verney had the choice of objects from Woburn and the show focusses on materials and making across the ages: wood, clay, stone, metal, textile and organic. From a monumental mid-17th century Mortlake tapestry, woven to a design by Raphae,l to expressive hand-painted silks by award-winning artist, Christian Ovonlen; from precious 18th century silverware, made by French Huguenot migrants, to highly personal glazed ceramic vessels by rising-star artist Shawanda Corbett, this exhibition presents a treasure-trove of unique and fascinating objects.
In the British Portraits gallery is a new presentation of the collection of portrait miniatures gifted by Lady Grantchester, sister of Sir Peter Moores, founder of Compton Verney. It showcases over 40 exquisite and intriguing miniatures from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, many seen in public for the first time.
