A talk on ALBRECHT DÜRER (1471-1528):

MASTER PRINTMAKER OF THE NORTHERN RENAISSANCE

1.30pm Tuesday 31 October 2023

Sanctuary Hall, Kenilworth Methodist Centre, 60 Priory Road CV8 1LQ

This talk will examine the genius of Albrecht Dürer, whose brilliant designs, starting with the Apocalypse series of 1499, transformed the humble fifteenth-century woodcut into a high art form. Alongside this, the evolution of engraving, tied to the art of the goldsmith, reached its peak with the engraved work of Dürer, whose engravings astonish the viewer today as much as they astonished his contemporaries. The lecture will further introduce the art of print connoisseurship, looking at print collecting, and the forensic examination of states, papers, and watermarks. Printmaking techniques will be elucidated with the aid of museum YouTube videos.

Art Friends Warwickshire is delighted to introduce to you Natasha Broad, lecturer and consultant on Old Master prints at Sotheby’s. She has worked extensively as a print and picture specialist at the auction houses Christie’s and Sotheby’s, as well as the galleries Johnny van Haeften and the Weiss Gallery, London. She previously taught history of art to adults in further education at Hampstead School of Art.

We will be using a venue new to us, in Kenilworth, so do come along and give us some feedback as you leave. There are c25 parking spaces behind the hall, in the centre’s car park, plus parking nearby. Instructions will be provided before the event.
