MUSIC IN ART
Historical musician and instrument maker, Sophie Matthews, explores the links between the visual and the oral in her presentation. Drawing upon the works of great painters such as Brueghel, Hogarth and Bosch, Sophie presents a variety of images of historical woodwind instruments in their original social context. The symbolism of music from the Middle Ages to the Baroque is also explored, along with live performances of historical music on authentic instruments.
Sophie began playing flute at the age of ten but is now better know for her prowess on the English border bagpipes to say nothing of her skills on the shawm, rauschpfeife and recorder. She is also one of only a handful of British musicians to play the Baroque musette, an 18th century French bagpipe akin to the Northumbrian smallpipes. When not touring with modern-day balladeers, GreenMatthews, she makes instruments, including her own baroque oboe.
