Following the tea, our speaker will be Tony Mawbey, a volunteer guide and external lecturer at Upton House. He will talk on the art collection assembled at Upton House by the philanthropist, collector and Chairman of Shell, Walter Samuel, 2nd Viscount Bearsted.
Lord Bearsted bought Upton in 1927 as a weekend retreat and filled it with an outstanding and eclectic collection, mainly of art and porcelain acquired over a period of more than forty years. The collection also includes pieces originally acquired by the 1st Viscount Bearsted, Marcus Samuel, which were inherited by Walter on his father’s death. Mr Mawbey will tell us the stories behind the purchases, where the art was bought, from whom, and why Lord Bearstead and his father chose what they did, often because the works are concerned with human beings and their relationship with each other and the world around them. The collection includes a considerable range of masterpieces from Bruegel and Guardi to Hogarth, Stubbs, El Greco and Bosch.
